How to Effectively Prevent and Treat Iron Deficiency Anemia in Piglets
Dextran Iron Injection is the preferred drug for iron supplementation in piglets. By injecting this medication, iron deficiency anemia in piglets can be effectively prevented and treated, improving their survival rate. When using, it is important to follow the correct administration methods and dosage to safely and effectively supplement the required iron for piglets.
▍ Main Ingredients and Indications
This drug is mainly used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia in piglets, calves, and lambs. It effectively improves issues caused by iron deficiency such as diarrhea, slow growth, and dull coat, significantly enhancing the survival and weight gain rates of young animals. Additionally, it shows excellent efficacy for iron deficiency anemia in pregnant and lactating females caused by increased iron demand and insufficient intake.
▍ Usage and Dosage
Administer to young animals via intramuscular injection, with a recommended dose of 10ml:0.5g (calculated as Fe).
02 Methods and Precautions for Iron Supplementation in Piglets
▍ Timing and Importance of Iron Supplementation
It is crucial to supplement iron as early as possible after piglets are born because they experience significant stress early on. Usually, iron supplementation at 3 days old meets the initial needs of piglets, but to ensure sufficient iron supply later, a second supplementation at 10 days old is necessary. Otherwise, piglets may show iron deficiency symptoms at weaning, resulting in lower weaning weights.
▍ Operation Guidelines
Before injection, thoroughly disinfect the needle and injection site, ensuring one needle per pig to prevent bacterial infection. Iron supplements should not be mixed with other drugs to avoid affecting efficacy. The supplement should be used immediately after opening. Before injection, restrain the piglet and choose the thigh or neck as the injection site. For neck injections, the needle should enter the skin at a 90-degree angle; for thigh injections, at a 45-degree angle. After injection, gently release the skin to allow the injection hole to close.
▍ Handling and Observation of Drug Overdose
If iron leakage is detected, immediately give the piglet an additional injection, adjusting the iron dose according to the pig's size to avoid toxicity from overdose. In practice, if using specifications of 50–100mg/ml, usually 2–3ml is injected; for lighter or weaker piglets, specifications with 150mg/ml iron content can be used, requiring only 1ml injection.
After iron supplementation, personnel should continuously monitor the pens. If piglets show symptoms such as weakness or difficulty breathing, immediate measures should be taken, such as intramuscular injection of 10% sodium thiosulfate for rescue. At the same time, it is essential to follow operational standards for iron supplementation to ensure safety and effectiveness and avoid unnecessary economic losses.
