Dextran Iron: Protecting the Health of Various Animals, Injecting New Vitality into Animal Husbandry Development
In the development process of modern animal husbandry, animal nutrition and health have always been the core concerns of breeders. Among them, iron, as an indispensable trace element for animals, is crucial for their growth, development, and immune function. Dextran iron, as an efficient iron supplement, not only plays an important role in piglet farming but also shows significant positive effects in the breeding of beef cattle, mutton sheep, poultry, and other animals, becoming an important "nutritional helper" to support the high-quality development of animal husbandry.
In the process of modern animal husbandry development, animal nutrition and health have always been the core concerns of breeders.
Supporting healthy growth of piglets, laying a solid foundation for breeding benefits
When it comes to the impact of dextran iron on animals, its application in piglet farming is the most widespread and effective. As observed previously on the front lines of piglet farming, newborn piglets have limited iron reserves from the mother, and the iron content in breast milk is very low, making it difficult to meet their rapid growth needs. Without timely iron supplementation, piglets are prone to iron deficiency anemia, manifested as lethargy, decreased appetite, slow growth, and in severe cases, even death.
Dextran iron injection effectively solves this problem. Zhang Limin, the person in charge of a large-scale pig farm, said: "In our farm, piglets are injected with dextran iron injection at a standard dose within 3-5 days after birth. After use, the incidence of iron deficiency anemia in piglets dropped from over 30% to less than 5%, survival rate increased by 8%-10%, and piglets grew significantly faster, with the average market time shortened by 7-10 days." Experts analyze that as an organic iron preparation, dextran iron is quickly absorbed by piglets after injection, rapidly replenishing iron reserves, providing strong support for intestinal development and immune system construction, thus laying a solid foundation for healthy growth of piglets from the source.
Empowering cattle and sheep farming, improving growth performance and quality
Besides piglets, dextran iron also plays an important role in beef cattle and mutton sheep farming. Especially in large-scale beef cattle and mutton sheep farms, due to high breeding density and difficulty in precisely controlling iron content in feed, some cattle and sheep are prone to iron deficiency, which affects growth performance and product quality.
At a beef cattle breeding base in Inner Mongolia, technical director Li Qiang showed reporters the growth data of beef cattle before and after using dextran iron: "Before using dextran iron, some beef cattle had rough coats and slow weight gain, with an average monthly weight gain of about 30 kg; after using dextran iron injection, iron deficiency symptoms in beef cattle were effectively improved, with an average monthly weight gain exceeding 35 kg, and the quality indicators such as beef color and tenderness also improved significantly." For mutton sheep, iron deficiency leads to decreased immunity, making them susceptible to diseases and increasing breeding risks. Regular supplementation of dextran iron can enhance their resistance, reduce morbidity, and improve mutton yield and quality, bringing higher economic benefits to breeders.
Ensuring poultry farming, reducing production losses
In poultry farming, the application of dextran iron is also gradually gaining attention. Although poultry have relatively low iron requirements, in high-density breeding environments, insufficient iron supply in feed or impaired intestinal absorption can still cause iron deficiency. Especially for young poultry such as chicks and ducklings, iron deficiency affects feather growth, bone development, reduces stress resistance, and increases disease susceptibility.
Wang Xiulian, the person in charge of a poultry farming cooperative in Shandong, said: "We used to neglect iron supplementation for poultry, and the deaths and poor growth caused by iron deficiency in chicks every year caused considerable losses. Later, under the guidance of technicians, we used dextran iron oral solution for chicks, increasing their survival rate by 5%-7%, with feathers becoming shinier and growth uniformity significantly improved." It is understood that considering the physiological characteristics of poultry, dextran iron oral solution or water-drinking formulations are more convenient to use, effectively meeting poultry's iron needs, reducing production losses caused by iron deficiency, and ensuring stable benefits in poultry farming.
Scientific use is key to achieving optimal efficacy
Although dextran iron has significant positive effects on various animals, industry experts emphasize that scientific use is key to achieving its best efficacy. Zhao Wei, a researcher at the Animal Nutrition Research Institute of an Agricultural Academy of Sciences, pointed out: "Different animals and growth stages have different iron requirements. When using dextran iron, it is necessary to strictly follow the recommended dosage and usage methods to avoid overdose. Excessive iron supplementation may burden animal organs such as the liver and kidneys, and even cause toxic reactions. At the same time, products from reputable manufacturers with qualified quality should be selected to ensure medication safety."
In addition, breeders should develop reasonable iron supplementation plans based on the actual growth conditions of animals and the nutritional content of feed. For example, in areas with low iron content in feed or during stages of rapid growth and reproduction when iron demand is high, the frequency or dosage of dextran iron use can be appropriately increased; whereas when feed iron content is sufficient, excessive supplementation is unnecessary to avoid resource waste and potential risks.
With the continuous development of China's animal husbandry towards scale, standardization, and greening, the requirements for animal nutrition and health are also increasing. Dextran iron, as an efficient and safe iron supplement, plays an irreplaceable role in protecting the health of various animals, improving breeding benefits, and promoting high-quality development of animal husbandry. In the future, with continuous advances in veterinary drug research and development technology, dextran iron products will be continuously optimized and upgraded to ensure healthy growth for more animals and inject new vitality into the sustainable development of China's animal husbandry.
